Energy Boosting Food

I don’t know about you but my energy levels are all over the place at the moment. If you’re looking to give them a boost try incorporating these five energy boosting foods into your diet.

1. Green Tea
If you’re out and about it’s always tempting to have one of those super delicious flavoured coffees, but step back!! They are so calorific and they contain a heap of sugar. They taste amazing and you’ll feel awake after drinking it but then your energy levels will crash, and we all know what that looks like. Opt for a green tea and you’ll be amazed at the difference, it will help you to maintain steady energy levels because it’s packed with natural antioxidants. Try and drink three to five cups a day to notice a difference.

2. Bananas
There’s a reason why athletes eat bananas and it’s because they’re a great energy source. They are also really good for your skin as they are contain skin-improving minerals. Pop one in your bag for a snack or blend one in your morning or afternoon smoothie.

3. Oats
Avoid those sugary cereals in a morning, they are tempting and tasty but contain a serious amount of sugar. Eating a portion of oats drizzled with some honey or topped with strawberries or blueberries is a much healthier option. Oats are a fantastic way of providing your body with slow-release energy throughout the day.

4. Dark chocolate
I’ve stopped buying milk chocolate because it’s too tempting to eat the whole bar. I now buy dark chocolate and just have one square which is pretty much all you need to feed your sweet tooth. Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants that boost your energy levels and your mood. The darker the chocolate the better!

5. Quinoa
This wholegrain is so good for you. It’s high in protein, complex carbs, fibre and B vitamins, and it’s also known to help lower stress levels. Add some to a salad or have a portion with some chicken or fish.

Food & Drink

Strawberry Pomegranate Sangria

The weekend is nearly here which means it’s time to start thinking about a refreshing drink to enjoy. This cocktail literally combines my two favourite things (wine and fruit). It’s so easy to make. No blenders or shakers required!

I’d suggest you make this in advance as it tastes much better after it’s been left to sit overnight. The recipe below is enough to serve eight people.

What you need:

  • 2 bottles of red wine
  • 1lb of strawberries
  • The seeds from 1 pomegranate
  • 2 cups of pomegranate juice
  • Soda water

How to make it:

1. Stick some music on – in my opinion it’s the only way to make a cocktail

2. Slice the strawberries (avoid eating too many of them along the way) and place in a large pitcher with the with the seeds from the pomegranate.

3. Add the wine and the pomegranate juice.

4. Pop in the fridge for a minimum of 6 hours. I would leave for 24 hours for a truly delicious taste.

5. Have a sip and add 1-2 tablespoons of granulated sugar or honey if you want it a little sweeter.

6. Pour into glasses and add some soda and ice. Garnish with a strawberry (if you didn’t eat them all)

7. Sit back and enjoy

5 Foods That Will Help To Burn Fat

Whether you’re looking to slim down for the summer season ahead or you’re just looking to adopt a healthy lifestyle, incorporating these foods in your diet can only be a good thing.

Green tea

Step away from the Yorkshire Tea bags and opt for green tea. Packed with anti-oxidants this refreshing drink will give your metabolism a kick start and burn through fat fast. Green tea is also lower in caffeine than black tea and coffee so it’s a great choice if you’re looking to reduce the amount of caffeine in your diet.

Eggs

Boiled, scrambled or poached. Eggs are full of vitamin B12 which contribute to increasing your metabolic rate. Enjoying a couple of eggs for your brekkie can help to break down fat faster.

Fish

Try increasing the amount of fish in your diet as it helps to keep your heart healthy, and yes you guessed it, it helps to boost that all important metabolic rate. Salmon, mackerel and herring are three of the best as they are rich in Omega 3.

Chicken

I don’t mean you should head to KFC here but incorporating chicken into you diet can make a huge difference. Chicken is packed with protein which is essential for maintaining muscle mass. The more muscle mass you have the more efficient you are burning calories. Simple hey!

Brazil Nuts

These are a great source of unsaturated fat and they digest slowly too which is an added bonus. Pimp up a bowl of cereal by chopping up a couple of brazil nuts and scattering on top.

Tasty Tuesday

IMG_1917Looking for some food inspiration? Wondering what to cook for dinner tonight? How about Tilapia salad with a chilli sauce? It actually tastes nicer than it sounds, I promise.

What you need:

  • Tilapia
  • Lettuce or Kale
  • Cucumber (chopped)
  • Red onion (sliced)
  • Cherry tomatoes

For the sauce you’ll need:

  • Chilli
  • Spring onion
  • Butter

How to make it:

This one is pretty simple to make. Cook the fish in the oven – it’s your choice if you want to cook the cheery tomatoes with the fish. Whilst the fish is cooking prepare the salad. You can use lettuce (any variety) or kale depending on what you fancy. Chop the cucumber, slice the red onion and cobble together on a plate. For the sauce, melt a teaspoon of  butter in a pan, add the chilli and spring onion and mix together until warm.

Take the fish out of the oven, place on the salad and place the sauce on the fish. Garnish with balsamic glaze or a salad dressing of your choice.

See, I said it was easy. It’s quick to make and it’s healthy, because it’s January and we’re all meant to be on a detox/health kick :-)

Spinach Wrap
Food & Drink

Super Spinach

I used to eat this super spinach open wrap all the time and for some reason stopped (not sure why). Anyway it makes a really tasty lunch and it’s relatively good for you (obviously that depends on what you put on it). Here’s how you make it.

Ingredients:

  • Whole grain wrap
  • Spinach
  • Mushroom
  • Tomato
  • Pepper
  • Meat
  • Olive oil
  • Cheese (Feta, goats or mozzarella)

Turn the oven on and set it around 190C (375F)

1. Grab a wrap, I have opted for a whole grain one here

2. Take a handful of spinach, rip it up into smaller pieces and scatter on the wrap

3. Chop the mushroom, pepper, tomato and meat and scatter on top of the spinach. Add whatever toppings you want at this stage

4. Drizzle with olive oil and place in the oven for around 8 minutes or until the wrap begins to harden

5. Add the cheese and either pop back in the oven until it melts or enjoy as it is.

See I told you it was super easy to make. It’s really tasty and filling too.

10 ways to cut 100 calories from your diet

You are what you eat and if you’re looking cut down on the amount of calories in your diet there are some simple ways to do it. Here’s my 10 favourite ways to cut 100 calories from your diet.

1. The lovely latte that you have daily tastes so good but it’s packed full of calories. Drinks are the biggest culprit so opt for a regular coffee and you’ll save yourself 100 calories or more. Use zero-calorie sweetener instead of sugar and you’ll save even more calories.

2. When you order a sandwich say no to cheese and you will cut 100 calories just like that.

3. Use a low-fat dressing or vinaigrette on a salad. Eating a salad may seem like the healthier option but if it’s swimming in a calorie packed dressing you may as well have a burger. Measure salad dressing and stay under two tablespoons if you want to cut calories. Leave croutons off your salad too!

4. Switch your milk to 1% instead of 2%, if you have cereal every morning this will make a huge difference.

5. When buying meat go for lean meat as this contains fewer calories.

6. Brace yourself for this one if you like drinking alcohol. A 5-ounce glass of wine and 1.5-ounce serving of distilled spirits have 100 calories each, and a 12-ounce beer has 150 calories. Reduce your calorie intake by one drink and you’ll cut 100 calories immediately.

7. When cooking use an oil mister instead of pouring olive oil straight from the bottle. One tablespoon of oil has 120 calories.  If you use a mister you’ll use a fraction of the calories.

8. Opt for fresh fruit instead of dried. Half a cup of raisins has more than 200 calories, one cup full of fresh grapes has just 80.

9. Eat steamed rice instead of fried rice and save around 96 calories

10. If you can’t resist pizza choose a slice of thin crust pizza over thick crust and save around 110 calories.
