Big Coat Time

It’s most definitely ‘big’ coat weather. I dug out my duffle coat that kept me warm through two Canadian winters and it felt great having the weight of a good coat on my back again.

Now I do love my duffle, but I’m a coat girl and I usually have about three or four on rotation. If you’re looking to add to your coat wardrobe here’s 10 of the best, available to buy right now – just click the links below!

10 reasons why Autumn is so great

I got that feeling tonight on my way home. The feeling of Autumn in the air. The sky was that lovely shade as the sun was setting and it kind of got me pretty excited.

Autumn is one of my favourite times of the year. Crunchy leaves, log fires, mittens, chunky knits and twinkly lights, it’s the best!

Here is why I love Autumn so much…

Comfort food
It’s almost a necessity to drink hot chocolate on a daily basis. How else are you meant to stay warm?!

As if by magic TV is actually watchable. Strictly Come Dancing anyone?

New clothes
Ok so you don’t actually need a complete new wardrobe BUT you will be required to invest in some new knits, maybe a new winter coat, warm boots, cute mittens, a matching hat, dress, jumper. Yeah ok, you need a whole new wardrobe

Fresh crisp air
I love the feel of autumn in the air. Crisp, dry and sunny days are the actual best

You suddenly notice how pretty the trees look. You might even take a picture you’re that impressed with the beauty of it

Misty mornings
Early misty mornings with that chill in the air are pretty lovely

Cosy pubs
Autumn is all about heading to a cosy pub and enjoying a glass of wine in front of a log fire.

After months of avoid soup because it’s too hot, you rediscover how comforting a warm bowl of soup is

Hot water bottles
Is it just me or are hot water bottles the best invention ever?!

Christmas is on the way
Autumn means Christmas is on the way. Mulled wine, Christmas parties, Christmas outfits, Christmas presents and cards, the list goes on!

Pulse Heater Review

Talking about having cold hands isn’t particularly interesting, but I did some research and there are a fair few people out there who like me suffer from cold hands, more specifically Raynaud’s.

Having Raynaud’s is a nuisance more than anything else. It certainly doesn’t get in the way of me enjoying life, although it can be pretty painful and really frustrating as until recently everything I tried failed to keep my hands warm.

The last two winters I have been in Canada and have experienced some extreme temperatures – recently down to -24. Canadians might be used to these conditions but I certainly am not. Last winter I battled through layering two (sometimes three if I could) pairs of gloves to try and keep my hands warm and it just didn’t work – both practically and from a style point of view.

My fiancé spotted the Aclima Pulse Heaters in a magazine and I immediately got in touch with Nordic Outdoor to see if I could test a pair out. They arrived and typically the temperature increased so I waited and a few days later the true Canadian winter arrived and the Pulse Heaters were put to the test.

I have to be honest I was skeptical to start with. They feel and look like a thick tuber grip and I didn’t really believe they’d make a huge difference. After giving them a really thorough test drive, I can’t think of enough ways to tell you how good they are. It seems completely over to the top to say they have changed my life but in some ways they have. If you suffer from Raynaud’s you’ll understand what I’m saying here. My freezing hands caused me pain when I was out and about and pain when I got home when they started to warm up. Now my hands stay warm from the minute I leave the house to the minute I get back. I wish I had these when I went skiing a couple of years ago and I certainly with I had them last winter.

The Pulse Heater is made from 200g merino wool and the reason they work so effectively is because they insulate your wrists where the veins are close to the surface of the skin and they help to maintain circulation. If you’re heading off skiing or to a cooler climate I can’t recommend them enough. They fit perfectly under a pair of mittens (without making your hands look huge) and they work really effectively worn on their own on days when it’s not that cold but your hands still need protection from the elements.

My Winter Beauty Picks

The cold, wet and windy weather is playing havoc with my skin. Dry, chapped and lacking that healthy boost it has in the summer months. There are so many products out there to fix every beauty problem, but if you’re anything like me you haven’t got the cash to be splurging on expensive creams, lotions and potions.

There are a few key beauty products that I use that seem to be doing the trick. They don’t cost a
fortune either.

Keep your hands moisturised and hydrated with Nivea hand cream with Macadamia Nut Oil

It’s a constant battle trying to keep my lips hydrated. eos lip balm is currently answering my prayers.

This isn’t technically a winter essential. For me it’s an all year round essential! I have searched and searched and I am pleased to announce this mascara actually does what it says. Rimmel Scandal Eyes Volumising Mascara

If your skin is feeling dry give this Organic Rose Hip Oil a try. It’s the bee’s knees.

I always find picking a foundation tricky. I am yet to find the perfect one but Maybelline hydrate + smooth foundation is working out pretty well at the moment. Mix with a drop of moisturiser in the day for a fresher look.

This is my splurge product but it’s totally worth it. Lancome Hydra Intense hydrating gel mask. Apply a thick layer, chill for five minutes then remove with a tissue or dry flannel. This mask feeds your skin leaving it super smooth and hydrated. It’s my winter wonder product.

Last up is Aussie Miracle Hair Insurance. It’s a lightweight conditioning spray for weak and distressed hair. It’s perfect if your hair gets in a tangle easily. I have been using this for a few weeks and I don’t know how my hair coped without it.

Five reasons why snow is ace

My Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feed has been covered in snow themed pictures over the last 24 hours. I am currently in Canada and thankfully my wish for snow was granted. I have to admit all the pictures from the UK were p**sing me off. Canada is like the home of snow and we didn’t have any!

So whilst I was ice skating (that’s what you do in Canada by the way) the snow just started to fall and I felt rather excited by it. Admit it you all love snow and here’s why:

1. It starts to snow and you immediately feel excited/romantic/giddy

2. You have the urge to just go outside, stand there in your jacket, look at the ground and say ‘it’s sticking’

3. Everything looks pretty in snow, even really ugly buildings

4. You have to wear your super cute chunky knits and bobble hat and you feel so cosy and comfy in them

5. Work might be cancelled for the day. SNOW DAY!

Food & Drink

How to make it

1. Pour 1/4 cup of the milk into a saucepan and add 2 spoonfuls of Nutella (add more if you like your hot chocolate super sweet) leave the saucepan on a medium to low heat.

2. Take a whisk and mix the milk and the Nutella together until it’s blended

3. Pour the rest of the milk (3/4 cup) into the saucepan and stir until it becomes hot and frothy

Winter Beauty Essentials

Arm yourself with these essential beauty products and be kind to your skin this winter.

beauty1. Vaseline My lips are the first thing that tell me winter is here, avoid unsightly chapped and dry flaky lips with a slick of Vaseline. I have a couple of tins, one for my beauty bag at home and one for my coat pocket when I am on the go.

2. Face cream. My favourite brand is Oil of Olay and my choice for winter would be the Age Defying Instant Hydration Day Cream.

3. Exfoliating is still a must during the winer. Soap and Glory Flake Away Body Polish has been in my life for a long time and won’t be leaving anytime soon. It’s deliciously good!

4. Give your skin a drink. You may be covering your body with layer upon layer of clothing but it’s still important to hydrate your skin. Nivea Extra Nourishing Body Milk is gorgeous and will see you through to spring.

5. Your hair will thank you for three minutes with this beauty. Aussie 3 minute miracle conditioner is a simple fix that will get your locks through the winter.
